Abstract: The article is devoted to the questions of etymology of words in Russian. The author gives a common concept and value of word etymology. It has been considered etymology small used indigenously the Russian words, such as a 'string-bag', 'zherlyanka'. Different opinions of origin of words, time and ways of their penetration in a common language have been analyzed by the concrete examples. Examples of interpretation of words an etymologic dictionary have been given
