Abstract: The presented article is devoted to the study of world practice in the field of architectural improvement and development of building complexes of research institutions. Complexes of buildings and structures of the research direction are one of the most popular types of workspaces, providing optimal conditions for the creation and implementation of various types of innovations. Dynamically developing technologies of high-tech industries have led to a smoothing of functional saturation and generalization of requirements for the design of research facilities. The architectural planning model of a modern research center is very different from traditional buildings and structures of similar importance; these centers are characterized by: close integration of scientific and educational activities, a special complex spatial organization of the environment, a unique architectural and spatial appearance. The authors characterized and determined the most optimal principles of architectural design, development and improvement of building complexes of research institutions.
