On the Issue of Rational use of Underground Spaces of Liquidated Mining Enterprises
Abstract: The article considers the use of the underground space of closed mines for various purposes, such as waste storage, the creation of geothermal power plants, as well as as a potential place for the construction of new cities and infrastructure. Successful examples of foreign countries such as Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Poland are considered. The reuse of abandoned mines is an important aspect of cleaner production practices, as it can fully exploit the potential and viability of unused resources, save social costs, provide a powerful endogenous driving force for the transformation of resource-intensive cities, provide employment opportunities for the unemployed and, finally, implement an environmentally friendly transformation of the mining industry. Scientific decisions on ways of reuse are a necessary condition and a crucial issue for the effective study of unused resources of closed mines.
