Abstract: The urgent need to solve the problem of accumulation and processing of municipal solid waste sets a primary goal for scientists, local governments of municipalities, and regional authorities in finding a way out of the current negative situation in this matter. Advanced waste-to-energy conversion technologies combined with a reliable purification system can provide a solution in the biodegradable waste disposal and the production of environmentally friendly energy. This article is devoted to the analysis of the current situation in the field of waste management in the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic for the further development of measures for sustainable waste management. The sources of formation and the amount of SMW generated in the context of municipalities are investigated, the assessment of SMW disposal facilities and land for unauthorized waste disposal is given. It is proposed to use the dependencies obtained taking into account the recommendations of the Pamfilov Communal Academy to calculate the prospective volumes of SMW accumulation, and as part of improving the waste management sphere, to provide for the design and construction of regional complexes for the processing and burial of SMW, which will ensure the reuse and recycling of waste to obtain useful resources from them, reduce the total mass stored waste in landfills to reduce the negative impact on the environment.

Keywords: waste, municipal solid waste, SMW landfills, accumulation rate of SMW, unauthorized landfills.
